Uni 5k ride 20200503

May 3, 2020

Completed another 5km ride, starting from a little walk to the railway station, to cross over to the other side of the tracks in order to begin my ride across the Sky Apartments (Tornet) and go on further. After I got to Engströms bil, I had a choice to either go right and head further along Bergsvägen, or attempt the big climb immediately after heading left. I was a bit apprehensive about this climb, as it’s a short and steep climb and I see many bikers struggling up or even dismounting their bikes to push it up, but I was determined.

As I slogged up the hill, I realized that it was actually so much easier to climb on a unicycle than on a bicycle; there are some things which are spectacularly counterintuitive about unicycling, and one of them is that climbs are far easier on the legs than descents are. Climbing a hill feels more like climbing stairs, with the rider having to lean in quite a bit. I remmeber consciously trying to pedal in a squarish manner, instead of the circular pedaling strokes we try to achieve while bicycling, and the difference seemed to make for a much more composed and confident slog up the hill. Within a few moments, I crested the climb, and hopped off only after I’d made it all the way to the top.

I’d also carried my Garmin Virb, strapped onto my helmet on this ride, and I shot a few clips. It took me a while to adjust the vertical angle of the camera, to get a decent balance between the ground and sky, as my posture while riding the unicycle is quite a bit different from when I bicycle. I realize now that it wasn’t quite centered laterally, causing a bit of a tilt in the video. I look to rectify this on subsequent rides I carry the camera on. Here’s the video:
