Midsummer
June 22, 2013
In a country where sunlight comes at a premium, it's apt that the Swedes celebrate midsummer, the day of the summer solstice, the longest summer day. I'd been to Trädgårdförening in Linköping, to take in the celebrations this year. "Midsummer is more of a national celebration than the National day celebration in Sweden", exulted a happy Swede, and was I happy that I went, instead of staying cooped up indoors!
There were people of all age groups, all having a great time.
I saw many women and children sporting these pretty floral head gear.
Both the kids and the grownup were having a lot of fun.
The preparation is underway for the installation of the maypole.
Ladies dressed in traditional attire.
The maypole being readied.
The maypole was ushered in to thunderous applause and cheering by the crowd.
And it's up!
And dancing and merriment started!
Once the elders were done, the youngsters and the kids took over and it was great fun. It was a most enjoyable day.
